Posted on July 4th, 2021 By Lankathilaka/Counterpoint.lk Courtesy NewsIn.Asia Colombo, June 5: Two weeks ago farmers in the town of Medirigiraya, in the Polonaruwa district, were protesting.  They had not got their quota of fertilizer to cultivate their fields from their local agriculture office and it was going to affect their crop yield, their finances and the country’s food supply. These farmers also have a proud agricultural heritage stretching back to the days of King Parakramabahu when Polonaruwa, the country’s second most ancient kingdom, was self- sufficient with food. The current forecast is not rosy. The growing scarcity of fertilizer is beginning to tell as the government’s ban on its import gradually chokes the agriculture sector.

Posted on June 30th, 2021 Courtesy Hiru News Buddhi Marambe, Senior Professor in the Department of Crop Science, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya stated that it is not possible to get high yields from paddy and tea cultivations by applying only organic fertilizer. Meanwhile, farmers in several parts of the country engaged in protests today (30) demanding the provision of fertilizer. Meanwhile, farmers in several areas in the Kurunegala District, including Pannala and Kuliyapitiya, who have been cultivating using organic fertilizer, stated that they have obtained a successful harvest by using organic fertilizer for their crops. Family challenges suicide theory in death of Kebbi varsity PhD student

Punch Newspapers Sections Published 24 June 2021 Controversy is trailing the sudden death of Ayo Adekunle Ajala, a PhD student at the Department of Crop Science, Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero. While investigation to unravel the cause of his death is ongoing, a post on social media two days after his demise, read, “This young boy, Ayo Ajala, a PhD student, hanged (sic) himself to death at KSUSTA PG hostel. The cause of his suicide is yet to be uncovered.” A photograph emerged showing the deceased’s lifeless body in a squatting position, hung with a rope to the hanger rack in his wardrobe. There also emerged another picture of blood stains covered with sand on the floor of the room.
