(Motoya Nakamura) Updated January 21 While a debate rages over the priority for scarce COVID-19 vaccines, the Department of Corrections on Jan. 16 and 17 vaccinated 1,343 older adults or those deemed medically vulnerable. Another 316 adults under age 60 got the vaccine because there were leftover doses. It appears some of those vaccinations weren t supposed to happen yet. Currently in Oregon, only people who fall under the 1A category are supposed to be vaccinated, such as those in nursing homes, for example. Prison inmates do not fall in that category.
Goen died at West Florida Hospital in Pensacola, according to Okaloosa County Corrections Director Eric Esmond.
“Jason was effortlessly kind, receptive, supportive and naturally gifted as an officer,” Esmond said in a statement. “As one of his co-workers so eloquently stated, Many have been influenced by Jason’s unending compassion, respect for all people, and service to the community. He was a dedicated son, brother, boyfriend, friend, and loyal co-worker. We ask that you keep his family, friends, and our department in your thoughts and prayers. His absence is significant and will be ubiquitously felt for quite some time.”
