Homicides fell to the lowest rate since 1963. Yet the nypd confronts challenges. Thousands of new yorkers have taken to the streets to protest against the nypds approach to policing. They responded to the Staten Island grand jurys decision not to prosecute the death of eric garner. There has been a widening rift between police, Police Unions, and the mayor, who expressed solidarity with some protesters.
