Editorial Myriad issues demand broad slate of 2022 candidates Fort Wayne City Councilman Tom Didier announced this month he ll be a candidate for the Republican nomination for mayor in 2023; Fort Wayne businessman Eric Doden announced he s a GOP candidate for governor in 2024. Their early announcements make sense: Earning name recognition and raising money take time, for the statewide race in particular. But the same is true for congressional and legislative contests less than 12 months away. Continuing gridlock in Washington, D.C., and a General Assembly session marked by its contentious tone and controversial bills on environmental measures, executive authority, public health, guns and more should have created strong candidate interest. Community prays for love, life, liberty

AUBURN — “This is God’s event,” said Erma Casselman, county coordinator of the 30th annual DeKalb County prayer rally Thursday at the Kruse Plaza south of Auburn. “It’s so good to get together in prayer again,” she said. Last year’s event was canceled due to the pandemic. “We’ve had a tough year, but God is on the throne and He loves to hear from His people.” The rally celebrated the theme, “Love, Life and Liberty,” drawing from II Corinthians 3:17 that reads: “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where is the Spirit of the Lord is, there is Liberty.”

Veteran receives medals he earned 70 years ago

AUBURN — Seventy years after he served with the U.S. Army in Korea, this week an Auburn man received the full recognition he deserves. In a ceremony Wednesday at American Legion Post 97, Raymond Kelley, 89, was presented with a Silver Service Star for participating in five separate campaigns of the war. A Korean War Service Medal awarded by the Republic of Korea also was pinned on his jacket. “Perhaps there is no other mission that is more important than making sure our veterans are properly recognized for their service,” said Travis Holcomb of the DeKalb County Veterans Service Office. Kelley served from 1950-1952 with the 25th Infantry Division in the Korean War. He also received a Purple Heart for sustaining wounds in service.
