New Movies to Watch This Week: Disney's 'Raya,' Amy Poehler's 'Moxie' and Eddie Murphy's Return

Skip to main content Currently Reading New Movies to Watch This Week: Disney s Raya, Amy Poehler s Moxie and Eddie Murphy s Return Peter Debruge, provided by FacebookTwitterEmail It’s a very different landscape this week than it was a year ago, just before the pandemic forced cinemas to close around the country. Still, with New York cinemas cautiously reopening this week and many other markets determined to bring moviegoing back, the studios and indie distributors alike are bringing many of their long-delayed releases onto screens, albeit in an entirely new way.  For contrasting examples, look at how two of the majors are handling what were intended to be family film tentpoles: Paramount decided to bypass theaters entirely with “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run,” using the title to launch its new subscription service, Paramount Plus (audiences can also rent it, at a price of $19.99, for a limited time via PVOD platforms). Disney tested a similar approach with

New Movies to Watch This Week: 'Nomadland,' 'I Care a Lot,' 'Test Pattern'

New Movies to Watch This Week: Nomadland, I Care a Lot, Test Pattern Peter Debruge, provided by FacebookTwitterEmail The treasures of an extended Oscar season just keep on giving, as Venice Film Festival winner and award season favorite “Nomadland” finds its way to theaters and Hulu subscribers. It’s a special film, about a woman (played by two-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand) who pulls up stakes and travels the country by van, hitting theaters at a time when many people have been reexamining their own lives. So if there’s a safe way to see it, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better option out there.

New Movies to Watch This Week: 'Barb and Star,' 'Judas and the Black Messiah,' 'Minari' and 'The Mauritanian'

Skip to main content Currently Reading New Movies to Watch This Week: Barb and Star, Judas and the Black Messiah, Minari and The Mauritanian Peter Debruge, provided by FacebookTwitterEmail With the Super Bowl behind us and the Oscars looming (and a pandemic-dampened Valentine’s Day as a marketing peg), American distributors are releasing their most robust slate of new releases in months this weekend. Awards contenders “Judas and the Black Messiah” (about the FBI-sanctioned murder of Fred Hampton) and “Land” (starring and directed by Robin Wright) arrive in theaters, hot off their premieres at this year’s virtual Sundance Film Festival. Also on the awards-worthy indie front, A24 releases last year’s Sundance winner “Minari” on demand. Steven Yuen stars in this immigrant story with universal appeal. And if theaters are open (and safe) near you, consider catching Michelle Pfeiffer in the wickedly funny “French Exit.”
