program was out of control, and the acting director has been reassigned to a policy position in the justice department, and in arizona where this operation was based the attorney general dennis burke has stepped down after approving the program, and testifying to congress about it. some members of congress say they don t believe that anybody involved in the fast and furious operation should get a pass, and they want to continue their investigation to see who else was involved an approved the operation. it was shutdown by attorney general eric holder when he heard about it, but i m sure we have not heard the end of it. it is a problem for atf which has not had a full-blown director since atf became a part of the justice department, because the decision was made to make the head of the atf, an administrator a senate confirmed presidentially appointed position, and politics have intervened and they have not been able to get anybody confirmed to be the full

more impressive. 500 road crews got very quickly to work and emergency teams combed these hillsides in all terrain vehicles looking for residents who had been stranded. reporter: in the town of jamaica, catherine hatinguais and suzanna maggi were rescued after the road and two bridges that led to their hillside home washed out. you would have had to walk. yes. reporter: for all supplies. yes. and it was not walkable. the bridges there are gone. reporter: there s only one road into jamaica now. the road leading out of town sits at the bottom of the ball mountain creek. the creek rose so violently on sunday it destroyed six houses, including what s left of david kaneshiro s home. the creek moved over and took out your house? took out everything, the front porch and the front house. reporter: at least 260 roads in vermont now look something like this: washed out from the side or sliced in two. to give you an idea of the scale of work involved just in jamaica, vermo
hurricane irene in the northeast. today, the national guard is dropping food and water to those cut off from the flooding in vermont. among those cut off is an entire wedding party stranded after a bridge collapsed. more than 100 people from this wedding will be stuck for at least four days until they have a road out. and in vermont alone, nearly 300 roads are closed and 35 bridges are impassable. a few hours ago, president obama said today that the victims of the storm have the supportf of the government. a lot of the fellow citizens are still reeling from hurricane irene and its aftermath. as a government, we are going to make sure that states and communities have the support they need so their folks can recover. nbc s rod allen is in brattleboro, vermont, which has seen some of of the worst flooding. ron, i saw the shot earlier today and it is unbelievable to see from a larger vantage point where you are standing right now. it is, tamron. this is about as bad as it g
