Penn State Brandywine recently hosted the spring meeting of the Mathematical Association of America’s Eastern Pennsylvania/Delaware section. The April 15 conference included about 125 college and university faculty members, graduate students and undergraduates in mathematics and related fields.
Mathematicians descended on Boston last week for the first in-person Joint Math Meetings since the start of the pandemic. But ongoing tensions over how the community fosters or fails to foster diversity and inclusion loomed large.

“We offer $10,000 sign-on bonus for all new drivers, regardless of experience,” said Brayden Lauder, who helps run a start-up trucking company, Stone Mountain Transport. “It seems to be (working). For the new guys, it definitely seems to be a triggering point.
Stone Mountain Transport has only been in business for roughly seven months. It has six trucks and growing; new hires don’t get the bonus all at once. We pay an extra thousand dollars of pay per month for 10 months,” Lauder said, “to make sure the driver stays with us.”
