With Aziz Ansari now behind the camera rather than in front of it, his series on modern love instead follows two queer, Black women â and is all the more mature and radical for it

There is another reality in which the third season of Aziz Ansariâs sorta-sitcom Master of None looks very different from the one now streaming on Netflix. In this alternate timeline, Ansari was not personally caught up in the #MeToo fallout and the Covid-19 pandemic never happened; thus it is possible for season three to pick up where season two left off: a lovelorn Dev whimsically riding

Aziz Ansari won critical acclaim for his portrayal of Dev Shah in his semi-autobiographical series Master of None, premiering in 2015, with the second season coming to Netflix in 2017. The series was nominated for four Emmy awards in 2017, and in 2018 Ansari won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy TV series.
Speaking of a possible third season, Ansari told New York Magazine in 2017 that he would have to “become a different guy before I write a third season. I’ve got to get married or have a kid or something. I don’t have anything else to say about being a young guy being single in New York eating food around town all the time.”
Given how
Master Of None evolved between its first and second seasons, you might not be too shocked to learn that it has undergone another metamorphosis. But following the misconduct allegations that swirled around co-creator and star Aziz Ansari, he has stepped back from in front of the camera to focus on co-writing and directing, while regular co-writer (and breakout star of S2) Lena Waithe becomes the focus of the third run, with the first trailer online.
This new season chronicles the relationship of Denise (Waithe) and her partner Alicia (the excellent Naomi Ackie). It s described as a modern love story that intimately illustrates the ups and downs of marriage, struggles with fertility, and personal growth both together and apart. Fleeting romantic highs meet crushing personal losses while existential questions of love and living are raised.
