The killer who abducted, raped and murdered a 12-year-old girl in a sickening crime that shocked Australia nearly 35 years ago has made a plea for freedom.
Barrie Watts brutally killed young school girl Sian Kingi on the Sunshine Coast on November 27, 1987 with the help of his then-wife and mother-of-six Valmae Beck.
The pair lured 12-year-old Sian to help look for a white poodle with a pink bow before Watts abducted her into the backseat of a Holden Kingswood station wagon.
After gagging Sian and driving her to a remote forest, Watts performed a fantasy he shared with Beck by repeatedly sexually assaulting Sian before strangling and stabbing her.

The Queensland Government is yet to throw its support behind the Morrison Government s $7.8m register - which would reveal an offender s name, photograph, nature of offending and general locality - citing a lack of evidence it would be effective in improving community safety. Queensland Coalition MP Julian Simmonds has lashed out at the State Government, accusing it of failing community expectations. Labor is putting these heinous criminals ahead of our kids safety and it s simply unbelievable, he said.

Subscriber only Bruce and Denise Morcombe were left stunned when a child safety lesson they were presenting in Brisbane last week ended with a surprise $300,000 donation to their foundation. The Lott by Golden Casket surprised the Morcombes with the donation on Tuesday while they were visiting the Brisbane office to share child safety tips with staff. Mr Morcombe said they were happily stunned . We have a strong vision for child safety in Australia, he said. We believe the time is right to move the goalposts and achieve the best outcomes protecting children from abuse and harm. Last year, the Foundation s National Day of Action on child safety education and awareness, Day for Daniel, reached more people than ever before, supporting children to recognise, react and report.

Subscriber only It is part of human nature to protect children from the evils that lurk in the shadows. Perhaps that is why acts of violence against children hit us the hardest. Over the course of the past 50 years, Queenslanders have been deeply shocked and suffered lasting consequences as a result of predators who target the most vulnerable members of our community. Some of the children who have been taken under the most violent and degrading circumstances have been either unable to fight back, or simply too innocent to know they were being targeted before it was too late.
