Through a combination of $8,000 in grants and $2,000 from its own budget, the Ionia Community Library recently installed a new “ScanPro 3500” microfilm reader, a major upgrade from the ancient system that was difficult for staff and patrons to use. “The old one was a big unit with a flat screen that you really couldn’t see with all the glare in the room,” recalled Circulation Assistant Denise Hoag. “No matter what you did, it was really hard to see. If it was a reverse image, which would be the black background with the white type, you couldn’t even read it. It was also loud very, very loud. You could hear it running out there at the front desk.”
