It took less than five minutes to come in, fill out paperwork, and get vaccinated, said Jacqueline Turner. City of Detroit opens no appointment needed vaccinations The city of Detroit has officially opened four vaccination sites taking walk-in patients with no appointment required. Turner says she had been putting off getting the vaccine, also known as vaccine hesitancy.

He’s one of the hundreds of thousands of people coping with the coronavirus outbreak. Like many, he lost a loved one to this deadly pandemic.

Screenshot of City of Detroit press conference Amid an exponential rise in COVID-19 cases, Detroit and state officials are focusing on vaccinations instead of restrictions to mitigate the spread.  So far, less than a quarter of Detroiters has received the inoculations, one of the lowest rates in metro Detroit. The city’s vaccination rate is 25% compared to 39% in Macomb and 48% in Oakland County. About 128,000 residents have received at least one shot this year, according to Mayor Mike Duggan.

In fact, Duggan said, the city is discussing possibly offering incentives to get reluctant Detroiters to vaccination sites.  Duggan on Wednesday laid out the city s plan to ramp up vaccination awareness in Detroit with community forums, a door-knocking campaign and virtual tools to locate the closest of 24 citywide vaccine sites as vaccinations lag surrounding counties and the positivity rate has soared to nearly 21% from just 3.5% in late March.

Beaumont Health says its Metro Detroit hospitals and staff have reached critical capacity levels amid the virus surge. Officials announced Thursday morning that the number of COVID-19 patients at Beaumont hospitals has reached more than 800, exceeding the volume of patients seen during the state’s last virus surge in the fall. The health care system was reportedly only caring for 128 COVID-19 patients on Feb. 28.
