Lyme Regis Mary Anning statue designs released

BBC News Published image captionThe statue of Mary Anning depicts her with her dog, Tray Early designs for a statue of Dorset palaeontologist Mary Anning have been released as campaigners make a final push to reach their funding target. The Mary Anning Rocks campaign has been working to create a permanent memorial in Anning s hometown of Lyme Regis. Her discoveries in the early 19th Century helped shape scientific understanding of prehistoric life, but her work was never properly recognised. The design sketch by sculptor Denise Dutton shows Anning with her dog, Tray. The campaign for the statue, led by 13-year-old Evie Swire, is supported by Prof Alice Roberts who appeared in a video to launch a crowdfunding bid to raise £100,000.

Winter storm moving across Texas could dump more than a foot of snow

A winter storm moving across Texas could dump more than a foot of snow before it spawns tornadoes in the state, as well as in Louisiana and Mississippi on New Year s Eve.   Jeremy Grams, a forecaster for the National Weather Services´ Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, said 12 to 18 inches of snow was possible west of the Pecos River in southwest Texas, with another 3 to 5 inches predicted for western Oklahoma by Thursday. Tornadoes are possible as the cold air moving eastward with the storm collides with moisture and warmer temperatures from the Gulf of Mexico, Grams said. Snow and ice is expected over a 1,500-mile-long stretch from Texas to the Great Lakes, with an entire year s worth of snow falling just before the end of 2020, Accuweather reports.

Appeal to boost funds for Brighton statue of suffragette Mary Clarke

ON Christmas Day 1910, Mary Clarke suddenly collapsed at her brother’s home in London, just two days after being released from prison. She was the first suffragette to die following police violence and forcible feeding in jail, and had suffered a brain haemorrhage. Mary, who was the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) organiser for Brighton, had taken part in a demonstration outside the Houses of Parliament on November 18. The day became notoriously known as Black Friday after 300 women were beaten and sexually assaulted by police officers. Mary returned to London days later to protest against police brutality and was arrested and jailed for one month, in which she went on hunger strike and was forcibly fed.
