LIKE OH SO many things related to the holidays, the ugly Christmas sweater craze was once a far quainter phenomenon. Back in the 2000s, when people first threw parties themed around tacky yuletide knits, guests mostly relied on luck to scrounge up a suitably hideous example. Maybe, digging through your attic, you found your mother’s 1980s Santa sweater. Perhaps, at Goodwill, you chanced upon a vintage red-and-green sweater repulsively adorned with jingle bells.
In 2007, Brian Miller co-founded UglyChristmasSweaterParty.com, a site compiling photos submitted by revelers at these December sweater get-togethers. But after visitors started inquiring how to get their own gauche noel knits, he began buying thousands by the semi-truck load to resell online. After a few years, it just became easier for his company and soon many competitors to make new sweaters rather than rely on the increasingly scarce vintage supply.
