A Florida man is in federal custody Monday for stealing nearly 200 medical ventilators that were meant for critically ill COVID-19 patients in El Salvador, authorities said.
Yoelvis Hernandez, 42, was arrested Thursday following a multi-agency investigation that began last summer and spanned multiple states. The suspect and an alleged accomplice are accused of stealing a tractor trailer loaded with 192 government-owned ventilators during a shocking overnight heist on Aug. 9, 2020.
The trailer was parked in a lot and was heading to Miami International Airport the next day, according to a federal indictment. The ventilators were intended for an El Salvador intensive care facility as part of a U.S. coronavirus aid program.
