Nahɂą Dehé Dene Band Chief Steve Vital said the purpose of the berm is to keep water from breaching a low-lying road and making its way to the nearby power plant. The water is about a foot away from the point at which an evacuation would be ordered.
Nahanni Butte, a small community of 93 people in the N.W.T., was put on high alert for flooding this week. The South Nahanni River rose a couple of inches as of Saturday morning, while a water monitoring bulletin issued Friday evening said the flow on the nearby Liard River had increased steadily over the past couple of days.
At Thursday's meeting, Vital said the plan is to have Nahanni Butte's 93 residents go to Fort Simpson or Yellowknife if the community needs to evacuate.
