In the lead-up to Wednesday’s Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) meeting, trade unions hope to hear what alternatives KAP Industrial Holdings considered before announcing the closure of Greyhound, Magic Transfers and Mega Bus – a move that would leave hundreds of workers unemployed. Unitrans may have breached labour laws in Greyhound closure - unions By Bongani Hans Share Durban - Unitrans Passenger, which owns Greyhound and Citiliner Coaches, has been accused by labour unions of breaching labour laws in the hasty announcement to shut down operations, rendering hundreds of their members jobless. The unions have undertaken to take the matter to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), where they will present their argument that they were kept in the dark ahead of the shutdown announcement. Unitrans allegedly took the decision unanimously and even rejected unions’ offer to assist it in finding a solution that would keep the buses on the road.

SABC Greyhound bus service has acceded to the union’s request to halt plans to close its operation. The bus company will now apply for the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) facilitation of Section 189. Earlier this week, Greyhound owners Unitrans announced that its Greyhound and Citiliner bus operations will stop on the 14th of February 2021. This move would affect close to 700 jobs. The Democratised Transport Logistics and Allied Workers Union (Detawu) has confirmed that it has received a letter from Greyhound management informing it about the CCMA process. The union’s Deputy Secretary-General Nontembeko Luzipo says they welcome the new plan to try to save the business and jobs.
