Coming out of Black History Month into Women’s History Month, I am struck by the feebleness of trying to squeeze the entirety of any group’s history into one month. Each of the groups with the distinction of having a “month” to tell its stories has been actively engaged in creating history for millennia. The othering associated with having students learn “regular” history and culture with some time allotted for “other” people’s history and culture only serves to reinforce White supremacy and the patriarchy.
