Karim Tabbou (pic), a key figure in demonstrations that forced longtime president Abdelaziz Bouteflika to resign in 2019, was handed a one-year suspended sentence last year for “undermining state security”. His detention comes as the pro-democracy protest movement known as Hirak has sought to regain some of the momentum it lost when it suspended street rallies just over a year ago due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tabbou, who was handed a one-year suspended sentence last year for “undermining state security”, is expected to appear before prosecutors his lawyer Ali Fellah Benali said on social media. “Algeria’s youth is determined to fight for their right to a dignified life,” Tabbou, 47, told the AFP news agency ahead of his detention. His detention comes as the pro-democracy protest movement known as the Hirak has sought to regain some of the momenta it lost when it suspended street rallies just over a year ago due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

(AFP) ALGIERS - Tens of thousands of Algerians flocked to the city of Kherrata, east of the capital, to mark the second anniversary of the start of Algeria’s popular protest movement, waving Algerian and Amazigh flags. They chanted the usual slogans of the Hirak, such as “For the independence of Algeria,” “President Tebboune is a forger brought in by the army” and “the generals in the trash.” Kherrata, which is 300km east of Algiers, is considered the cradle of the Hirak. On February 16, 2019, thousands of Algerians gathered spontaneously, calling for comprehensive political change and the total removal of the powers in place.
