Democrats argued the resolution was rushed onto the agenda and, in recent weeks, have questioned if the desire to downsize is an impetus for the Republicans’ unilateral decision to disband the county’s Independent Reapportionment Commission.
Republicans, who have been openly floating the idea of downsizing the Legislature since January, have argued the commission’s disbanding was made necessary when it was learned a member appointed by Democratic Minority Leader Rebecca Edwards was ineligible.
Democrats have disputed the member’s ineligibility and the mechanism in the creation of the independent committee which was also created by referendum vote of county residents that allows the Legislature to disband the committee.
