Lawmakers have introduced a bill to double down on plastic shopping bag restrictions, making it harder for stores to offer any sort of plastic bag at checkout.
It s in response to grocery stores and other retailers taking advantage of a so-called loophole in Delaware s single-use plastic shopping bag ban, which took effect at the start of 2021, by simply replacing the thinner single-use plastic bags with thicker ones.
Bags can be thicker than 2.25 mils, under the law.
The thicker bags can be reused, but customers don t appear to be bringing them back their second or third trip to the store. Local environmental officials and advocates say the thicker bags could actually be more harmful to the environment, depending on how few are reused.
While state officials continued to creep closer to a budget deal, another key piece appeared to fall into place Wednesday: a state income tax cut for middle class families but not until 2024.
The package also includes relief for Connecticut’s struggling restaurants, but much less than was originally proposed. Meanwhile, tax increases on wealthy households and a new digital media levy are out.
This is one of the most partisan budgets I have witnessed in the legislature.
This budget includes $1 billion is capital projects for Democrat districts only, including a pay raise for lawmakers. I will donate this pay raise to local non-profits as I have done previously. Year after year the Democrat-controlled General Assembly adopts a state budget that is unsustainable. As we continue to move forward and reopen following the start of the pandemic last year, the State of Illinois must restore fiscal responsibility to the state budget before it’s too late.
