President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden at President Trump s inauguration. (Jonathan Newton/The Washington Post)
Every four years on January 20th the President of the United States begins a new term in office by taking the following oath at his inauguration, “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of the President of the United States, and will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Every President of the United States has taken the same oath since President Washington first took it 232 years ago. It is a hallowed oath taken on a momentous day.
