Cabinet ministers convened on Tuesday to discuss the appointment of a permanent justice minister after High Court of Justice said the government will not be able to properly function if the position is not filled until the end of day.
Supreme Court Chief Justice Esther Hayut on Sunday issued an ultimatum to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Benny Gantz, urging them to appoint a permanent justice minister within 48 hours.

The High Court of Justice heard arguments on Monday regarding petitions asking to open a criminal investigation against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the submarines and missile corvettes corruption affair.
Hundreds of protesters gathered outside of the Supreme Court building in Jerusalem before the hearing, having arrived in a convoy of dozens of cars that travelled from Tel Aviv to the capital carrying inflatable submarines on their roofs in protest.
At the center of the submarine affair are two agreements between Israel and the German company Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems made five years ago: One was to buy three submarines for 1.5 billion euros, and the other was the purchase of missile corvettes for the purpose of defending Israel’s offshore natural gas fields and production platforms for 430 million euros.

The High Court of Justice announced on Monday that it will hear petitions calling for a criminal probe into the alleged involvement of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the so-called submarine scandal.
The Movement for Quality Government in Israel has requested that the court compel Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit to order a criminal investigation into Netanyahu’s possible involvement in the affair, also known as Case 3000, which revolves around allegations of a massive bribery scheme in the multi-billion-shekel state purchase of naval vessels from German shipbuilder Thyssenkrupp.
