Fred Parker recognized
The New Mexico School Boards Association (NMSBA) Deming Public Schools Administrator Fred Parker is the recipient of the 2021 Excellence in Student Achievement Awards.
The award, sponsored by NMSBA, are presented to individuals selected by local boards of education throughout New Mexico who have played an important role in improving student achievement in their local school district. Fifty-Eight (58) school boards participated in this year’s program and two hundred and nineteen (219) award recipients were selected.

Online registration is now open for PreK, Kinder, and new students to the district. You are not required to register online if you were a student in the 2020-2021 school year, in grades K-12, attending Deming Public Schools(DPS).

DEMING – Longtime Deming educator Vicki Chavez was selected as Superintendent of Deming Public Schools on Monday, April 26, by the Deming Public Schools Board of Education. The board met on Saturday, April 24, 2021 to interview the finalists for the open Superintendent position. Two Advisory Committees, comprised of district staff and community members, also interviewed the finalists, and provided input to the board.
The board held another meeting on Monday, April 26, 2021 to review the Advisory Committee’s input and selected Chávez unanimously. Chávez will start in her new role on June 1, 2021, pending contract and salary negotiations.
DEMING – Another childhood friend of the late Glenda Sanchez has stepped forward to help establish a scholarship fund in her memory.
“Glenda was a playmate of mine through childhood and I have kept in touch with her for 45 years,” said Amy Seltzer of Deming. “Today, I feel the loss.”
Sanchez, a longtime educator in Luna County, died of COVID-19 complications in November of last year. Her husband soon followed.
Seltzer noted that this week would have marked the 21st annual Cabalgata Binacional; the freedom ride toward goodwill between two nations in Columbus, NM. Sanchez, grew up in Columbus and helped organize the freedom ride that is celebrated annually with the crossing of Mexican riders on horseback at the United States-Mexico Border and American riders who join them in Columbus. The event featured a parade, fiesta, vendors and educational programs at neighboring Pancho Villa State Park.

As regular readers are aware, the Daily Press welcomed a new reporter into its newsroom last summer: Makayla Grijalva, a young journalist who graduated from the University of New Mexico in May of last year with a double major in multimedia journalism and political science.
Grijalva, who also held the position of managing editor at the university＊s student newspaper, the Daily Lobo, was elected late last year as an at-large board member for the Rio Grande Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
Thanks to a paid fellowship program launched by the New Mexico Local News Fund and the UNM Communication and Journalism Department, Grijalva was placed in the Daily Press newsroom immediately after she graduated last year, and ultimately took over many of the beats that reporter C.P. Thompson covered before abandoning his journalism
