Semenya Wins 5,000m Race, But Falls Short Of Tokyo Olympics Qualifying Time

PHOTO: Phill Magakoe / AFP   Double Olympic 800 metres champion Caster Semenya moved closer to qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Games in a new event after defending her South African championships 5,000m title in Pretoria, on Thursday.  Semenya trimmed nearly 15 seconds off her personal best by crossing the line in 15 minutes 52.28 sec 42.28 sec outside the Tokyo qualifying time of 15:10.

Vandrezzer FC Exits Nigeria National League

  The Management of Vandrezzer Football Club of Lagos have announced their decision to withdraw from further participation from all activities of the Nigeria National League with immediate effect. According to a statement on the club’s official website, their decision to pull out becomes imperative in view of the fact that the management and board of the Nigeria National League as presently constituted has demonstrated enough resolve and communicated same to them in clear terms that the club’s transformation agenda is not in any way needed in the lower tier league. The statement further reads, “recall that in our bid to reposition the league and open it up to become visible enough to be able to generate revenue in accordance with global best practices; we requested and received written approval from the hierarchy of the Nigeria National League an approval to stream live, all our games home and away. Fabrice COFFRINI / AFP.   A senior Japanese politician said cancelling the Tokyo Olympics over the coronavirus remains a possibility on Thursday, as a surge in cases renews concerns about the Games with less than 100 days to go. Toshiro Nikai, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s number two, said the Olympics must be cancelled “without hesitation” if the virus situation is too severe.
