this and why? the latest one, as you said, was last night. it was the crew of shuttle america flight 5911 from richmond, virginia. they reported an unmanned aircraft off the left side of its embracing e-145 aircraft as it was landing at jfk. now, on friday two flights once again landing at jfk spotted drones close to their aircraft. the first one, according to the faa, jetblue flight 1843 noted a drone at 2:24 p.m. when approaching the airport. the cockpit audio recording obtained by cnn says the drone passed just below the plane s nose when the jetliner was flying 800 to 900 feet. the next one on friday, 5:00 p.m., delta flight 407 was once again preparing to land at jfk when the cockpit reported seeing a drone under its right wing. now, we were just able to obtain the cockpit audio from last night, the third drone sighting. let s listen.
pilot. reporter: scares like the one at jfk happen more often than you think. the faa reports at least two drone incidents each day, an average of 60 close calls each month. in the cases of delta flight 407 and jet blue flight 1834 both the planes landed safely. the faa tells cnn it s investigating both incidents. nick valencia cnn, atlanta. new today, there are conflicting reports about whether jericho, the brother of cecil the lion has also been killed. an oxford university researcher tracking jericho tells cnn the lion seems to be alive based on gps data from his collar. but earlier, the head of the zimbabwe conservation task force told cnn that a hunter illegally killed jericho in zimbabwe. jericho was believed to be caring for the cubs of cecil, who as you ll remember was illegally hunted and killed in early july. let s certainly hope that s not
principles for british values and for freedom. reporter: they came here to fulfill costa s wish to bring home and capture isis flag for his former colleagues in the marines. my brother never got to complete that mission. so i m going to help him do it. reporter: cnn first met jordan in syria last october, where he was making light of the challenges. second day in i got hit by a mortar in my on a flight. reporter: nine months later, standing by his friend s grave in central england, he s overwhelmed by emotion. when his own nation wasn t willing to step up and do something, he did. so i think as an honor to have known him. reporter: jordan and costa both in this photo were fighting in northern syria with the militia known as the ypg, the local kurds fighting to drive isis from their towns and villages. they re most famous for their battle of kobani where international air power helped push isis out of the key town by
this time by a separate airliner delta flight 407 prepares to land at jfk airport, with 154 people on board. when the pilot spots a drone on the southwest side of the plane, just about 100 feet below. the pilot immediately contacts air traffic control. did you by any chance get the color or type? no it is not close enough to be able to tell. reporter: then jfk tower warned other pilots of the possible danger flying around them. jetblue, use caution on arrival, the one that s ahead of you reported a drone. we re watching out for it. reporter: phil dernerh weighed in saying without a doubt this was a close call. explains a drone flying within 100 feet of a plane can get sucked into an engine or worse.
if it is from mh-370 this would be the first piece of physical evidence from that flight and it could provide much needed clues to what happened to that plane and the 239 people who were on board. cnn correspondent david malko is following this investigation. the investigation is happening in france but investigators from all over the world will be part of this. can you explain? george that s right. this will be handled delicately and with a lot of sensitivity. french has jurisdiction over this piece of debris because of where it turned up on reunion island but the malaysians are leading the investigation. you re going to have teams from the united states from the ntsb and boeing coming in as well. the reason this is taking so long is because it needs to be done by the book. everybody has to get on the same page and agree how they re going to proceed, the french have opened a criminal inquiry so the court system is also involved.
