Former Darfur janjaweed leader, Ali Muhammad Ali Abdelrahman (also known as Ali Kushayb), appeared before Pre-Trial Chamber II of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, the Netherlands today, in a hearing to confirm charges on 31 counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes. The hearing is scheduled to run until Thursday.
In an initial statement to Presiding Judge Rosario Salvatore Aitala, Judge Antoine Kesia-Mbe Mindua, and Judge Tomoko Akane, Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda outlined that the charges to be confirmed “include crimes of torture, rape, and murder of civilians in the Wadi Salih and Mukjar Localities of West Darfur State, between at least August 2003 and at least April 2004”.
The International Criminal Court’s first major hearings in the case of Ali Kosheib on May 24, 2021 are an important step toward justice for grave crimes committed in Darfur, Sudan.
Sudan warned about impending humanitarian disaster in El Geneina shelters

A committee of victims from the Kerending camps warned about a humanitarian and health disaster in the shelters of El Geneina. They indicated that there was a lack of toilets and medical support, and that food was scarce.
They also said that some roads in El Geneina are still closed and that some neighbourhoods are still under siege, despite the Arab sit-in being officially lifted last week. The spokesperson said that these sit-ins are obstructing the movement of humanitarian organisations.
On Sunday, the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) already warned of cholera and measles outbreaks in El Geneina’s shelters of newly displaced people and explained that humanitarian aid could not reach El Geneina as a result of the sit-in.
