should be a warning to troublemakers in congress who want to impose more sanctions on iran. back to you, shannon. all right. we are waiting. and hopefully that delay isn t much longer. ali, thank you. we, the people, have a lot to consider this morning following president obama s final state of the union address. slightly older, noticeably grayer than his address in 2009, the focus was on major issues facing our future, and in a less obvious way, the 2016 election. let me start with the economy and a basic fact. the united states of america, right now, has the strongest, most durable economy in the world. last year vice president biden said that with the new moon shot, america can cure cancer. tonight i m announcing a new national effort to get it done and because he s gone to the mat for all of us on so many issues
and so on. so the idea of a delay isn t completely irrational and i think the president delaying it is proof of that. let me make a series of points. one is that the president did not do this unilaterally, let s start with that. but also the fact that this is a program that passed both houses and has been affirmed by the supreme court. when in history have we seen a situation like this where you re willing to shut down the government for something i m not willing to shut down the government so i want to be clear about that. but that s going to be the effect, isn t it, congressman? no, i don t think so. we ve been down this road many times. the reality is we re in negotiation. so are we going to put our best foot forward and have no leverage? of course not. so everyone knows there is a little bit of negotiating going on, positioning and posturing. where does the posturing end and where does the serious stuff begin? well, first of all, it s all serious. but you do have to h
hundreds of flights grounded and looks like a the lot of passengers have no choice, but to wait it out and our shannon bream is live at washington s reagan national airport. shannon, tell us the latest on flight delays there. well, jamie, we just checked with the f.a.a. moments ago and the only place experiencing major delays right now is atlanta. that airport we heard the traveler there complaining about what he was going to be stuck with, he may not be going anywhere, there is a ground stop in effect meaning that no flats flights planning to land in atlanta can do that now and we ve seen the situation off and on with philadelphia s airport today and the good news is the f.a.a. says no other major airports are experiencing delays beyond 15 minutes at this point. that s pretty incredible, but there could be a snowball effect, i m not being humorous about it because a lot of flights can t get in from other places because even that 15 minute delay. right, and the lack of delay is
isn t good and trying to fly and amtrak notified us of cancellations north of new york into boston, from boston to portland, several trains have been canceled altogether, as well as service across the state of virginia where they re not used to the amounts of snow that showed up today and the roads as well. the trouble started yesterday in the deep south where they got that christmas day snow. it triggered some things, the cars sliding into ditches and accidents and dozens now as the storm moved up across the east coast and up to the north. and at least two accidents have been attributed, fatal accidents, directly to the weather at this point, jamie, it s not safe. shannon bream live for us tonight. thanks so much. sure. for the information for all of you trying to get around and from the headaches in the airports to the misery on the roads. plenty more you need to know. the busy i-95 corridor, many of you will be travelling and runs from florida to maine and it s getting socked
canceled. because they re not in the air the delays aren t happening and thousands of flights have been canceled and including transatlantic and mid atlanta coast area. and delta, many others, and even if you have good weather in your area not too bad in the washington region, but that doesn t mean the board looks good at reagan international airport. they re filled with more cancellations and delays than on time flights, the domino effect from one or two airports, that s all that takes to start it and the snow and ice trickled out. and some of the airlines canceled preemptively and a lot of them have to do that now that it s arrived, jamie. coming up, we ll tell them what they can do, what their rights are with the airlines because they re offering a little bit of compassion in this situation. what about the railways though and the roads? are many people going for an alternative method of transportation. usually you think a better, easier option and the weather
