New York, New York, June 30, 2021 Carnegie Corporation of New York released its annual list of Great Immigrants today, honoring 34 individuals who have enriched and strengthened our society and our democracy through their contributions and actions. The philanthropic foundation invites Americans to celebrate these distinguished individuals by participating in its online public awareness campaign Great Immigrants, Great Americans, #GreatImmigrants.
The Class of 2021 represents more than 30 countries of origin and emphasizes service to society, including honorees who are recognized for helping others as medical providers and researchers; as advocates for the disadvantaged, disabled, and disenfranchised; and as changemakers in politics, voting rights, climate change, and teaching. A Delaware National Guardsman who missed his citizenship ceremony due to his deployment to the U.S. Capitol following the chaotic insurrection got an assist from Rep. Ed Perlmutter. When the Colorado Democrat heard his story, he got to work to remedy the situation.
Perlmutter said he stuck up a conversation with a group of guardsmen in the building. The Delawareans told him that Spc. Jun Cho, with the state’s National Guard 262nd Heavy Equipment Maintenance Company, would have to delay becoming a U.S. citizen. He missed his Jan. 13 ceremony due to their deployment.

The Delaware State Chamber of Commerce awarded the Josiah Marvel Cup Award to Major General (Ret.) Francis D. Vavala.
The award was given at the State Chamber’s 184
th Annual Dinner.
Established in 1951, the Marvel Cup honors a Delawarean who has made an outstanding contribution to the state, community, or society. The Chamber’s highest honor is named in memory of Josiah Marvel, who reorganized and served as the first president of the State Chamber in 1913. Recipients of the Marvel Cup are kept secret until the night of the dinner.
