Sussex County s beaches and inland bays showed visible effects of the winter weather that hit Delaware earlier this week.
A drawn-out winter storm that brought much of the Northeast snow was more notable in Sussex County for large waves that left dramatic sand cliffs.
At Broadkill Beach, sharp sand cliffs cast a shadow along the beach. Photos by Driscoll Drones of the large cliffs circulated on social media and brought a flurry of reactions as they documented the erosion and flooding from above.
Sand cliffs, or scarps, are formed by storm-strengthened waves, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The sand cliffs are a natural process occurring along the coast each year as waves carve them before calmer conditions return them to a flatter look.
The fastest-growing town in Sussex County has two new restaurants and a hotel under construction.
Grotto Pizza and Texas Roadhouse are going up right next door to each other in the Peninsula Crossing shopping center on Route 113 south.
Grotto is set to open in March. Texas Roadhouse has yet to announce an opening date.
Just a bit further south on Route 113, an Avid Hotel is under construction behind the Delmarva Health Pavilion. Town Manager Sheldon Hudson expects the about 80-room hotel to open in the next few months.
“It has that minimalistic millennial orientation,” he said. “Your middle-class weekend traveler is who they target.”
