Whether or not he wins an Oscar on April 25, Tomer Shushan has achieved an exceedingly rare accomplishment.
The 33-year-old Israeli filmmaker’s first independent short film, “White Eye,” was one of 10 shortlisted in the Live Action Short Film category for the 93rd Academy Awards, out of 174 that qualified.
On March 15, “White Eye” was announced as one of the nominees.

“Shtisel” and “Unorthodox” star Shira Haas discussed her latest film, the Ophir-winning (and potentially Oscar-nominated) drama “Asia” at the InFocus: Israeli Cinema film festival, appearing virtually via Zoom at a panel that also featured writer-producer Ron Leshem (“Valley of Tears,” “No Man’s Land,” “Euphoria”) and producer Alon Aranya (“Tehran,” “Your Honor”).
Presented by New Filmmakers Los Angeles and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in partnership with the Consulate Generals of Israel in Los Angeles and New York, the virtual festival also featured a program of five award-winning Israeli short films and a panel discussion with their directors.

The new edition of Feature Launch is ready to unspool, and the MIDPOINT Institute s leading feature-length film training programme has invited nine projects by debuting or sophomore filmmakers and three script-consultant trainees to take part this year.
The teams, consisting of writers, directors and producers from Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro and Poland, are participating in the year-long development platform, which this time starts in February and will run until January 2022. They will be joined by three script-consultant trainees from the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Poland.
