Grow Mobil event coming to DeKalb Community Gardens

Northern Star DeKALB – The DeKalb Community Gardens will have their Grow Mobile Event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 830 N Annie Glidden Rd, to give free boxes of food to those that need it. Grow Mobile is a program administered by DeKalb Community Gardens to bring fresh food into the food deserts of DeKalb County, according to the DeKalb Community Gardens website. The Grow Mobile events have been taking place multiple times per week and across various areas since 2016, said Jackie BiNatale, Communications Director for DeKalb Community Gardens. Due to the colder weather and current lack of fresh produce, DeKalb Community Gardens has partnered with the Northern Illinois Food Bank to get non-perishable products to those that need them, BiNatale said. When the growing season for produce begins, more fresh produce will be available.

NIU Bookstore Makes Shocking Going Out of Business Announcement

Dekalb s Village Commons Bookstore has been around long enough for not only some of our parents to shop at, but possibly even our grandparents. The go-to bookstore for Northern Illinois University students has been around for 51 years offering more than just books, students and shoppers could also find Huskies-gear, and so much more. The beloved store announced they will close their doors for good. Thank you for everything VCB. Since I lived in University Plaza while I was on campus I loved that it was quick and convenient to get too. It was always a great time to stop in and get new NIU gear. Facebook donates $10,000 to small businesses in DeKalb

Northern Star DeKALB – Facebook is contributing $10,000 to the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce for the Small Business Member Assistance Fund, according to a Dec. 17 DeKalb Chamber of Commerce news release. The Small Business Member Assistance Fund can be used for a number of expenses such as membership dues, promotional advertisements, sponsorships or program and event registrations.  These funds can be requested by completing a form on the DeKalb Chamber’s website, and are reviewed on a weekly basis as long as funds are available. “The DeKalb Chamber has been focused on the importance of local small businesses since we started 96 years ago, but the impact of the pandemic and additional challenges faced by businesses are greater than ever in our lifetime,” said Matt Duffy, executive director for DeKalb Chamber of Commerce.
