Mourid Barghouti in Our Hearts: The Poet Passes Away at 76 Published February 17th, 2021 - 10:32 GMT Mourid Barghouti and family (twitter) Mourid Barghouti is a renowned Palestinian poet who passed away on Sunday, February 14, at the age of 76, in the Jordanian capital Amman. Born in the Palestinian village of Deir Ghassanah, near Ramallah, in the West Bank, on July 9, 1944, Barghouti spent most of his life in exile.  The legacy that Barghouti left behind is extremely rich, not only because he was one of the most articulate defenders of the Palestinian cause, but because his writing has encapsulated the collective agony and sumoud, steadfastness, of the Palestinian people everywhere.

Abu Dhabi: Iconic Palestinian poet Mourid Barghouti, a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause, died on Sunday at the age of 76, his family said. On his official Facebook page, his son, the poet Tamim Al Barghouti, mourned his father Mourid by posting a black picture with his name. Barghouti, who was known for being a strong advocate for the Palestinian cause, was bornin 1944 in the mountainous village of Deir Ghassanah, west of the River Jordan in Palestine. The cluster of villages was dominated by the Barghouti clan of politicians, poets and landowners. His father worked the land, then joined the Jordanian army. Aged four, when the state of Israel was declared, Barghouti learned of the Palestinian nakbah, or catastrophe, as non-Barghoutis with different dialects appeared in his village.

In 1967, just as he graduated with a degree in English literature, the Arab-Israeli War broke out. He tried returning to Palestine after the Six-Day War but was barred from entering his native country. The poet soon found himself stateless and homeless.

Renowned Palestinian poet Mourid Barghouti has died at the age of 76 in the Jordanian capital Amman, after spending most of his life in exile. Mourid’s son, Arab poet Tamim Barghouti, wrote late on Sunday on his Facebook page: “May Allah have mercy on my mother and father”. The Palestinian Minister of Culture Atef Abu Saif mourned Barghouti’s death, saying the Palestinians and Arab world have “lost a symbol of national struggle and creativity”. On July 8, 1944, Barghouti was born in the Palestinian village of Deir Ghassanah on the outskirts of the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah, four years before the Nakba (Catastrophe), the ethnic cleansing of Palestine and near-total destruction of Palestinian society during the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948.
