no, i was just going to say, we are it seems like everything is in some sort of slow motion, just because of the pace of news any more. it s not that long ago we were talking about the way that paul manafort spent his money. that s the way they sort of began the case. here s a guy who made tens of millions of dollars consulting on politics and blew through it all by the time he went to work for the president. he didn t have any money left. they ve got a legal defense fund. word is it s not doing very well. i m just curious if either of you guys have a guess how much this is costing him? the paul manafort defense fund would need how much money to pay off these lawyers? this isn t the end for it either. you re asking me to guess at what other defense attorneys are making? this is hearsay in the defense part. i can tell you a lot. it s in the millions. billing aside, it s all the any experts they ve used, all the document review. everything. it s a heavily document
october, november, december, january. there s no budget. when you put a budget together, democrats and republicans sit down and work it out. remember, chuck schumer, the head of the senate, offered the president a $25 billion wall. that whole deal blew up. i think if we can sit down, democrats and republicans, house and senate, work out a budget, and in that context, remember, secretary mattis is requested a huge increase, which is over $700 billion, and secretary mattis understands thatio have to fund the nondefense part in addition to the defense part. so as we look at all these numbers, and we look at the amount of money that the president wants for defense, and we haven t dealt with it yet, even this year, we re up to the next year now. you have taken the leap to defense spending, but we re talking about the immigration bill here. are you saying that this immigration plan will have to be tied to whatever the next budget
they re going for it. i think they re going to get it here. avery, prosecutors can go into this feeling that it s fairly favor only for them. especially in light of what richard has outlined for them. everybody has seen it and knows they re intimately involved in the details of this case. so why wouldn t there be on the defense part a more aggressive fight to have a change of venue. well i think there was a very aggressive fight. you got a team as good as it gets in capital cases and i think judge o toole in his ruling and it s a comprehensive memo explains why there can be a fair jury. i, frankly, have a lot more faith in humanity and people in general than richard does. because i do think what s going to happen is that it s going to be an intense long effort to get this jury selected. and they are going to be impartial. let me tell you something, there are enough safe guards for tsarnaev in terms of his
very hard, and they should be commended. again, i respect what juries do. i don t always agree but i respect everything they did and should be commended for their efforts. charged with pardon me? how politically charged his case was with the abortion issue and so many other issues that were swirling around, they were able to really focus i have confidence in the juries and how they proceed. i mean, although i do there is also built of feeling on the defense part of, what salmon must feel like swimming upstream. that s what we felt like in this case but i think the jury i don t believe that. there s been a lot of publicity, a lot of negative publicity, but i have confidence in the jury system and the people that take their job seriously and i don t think they are influenced by that.
to do that. that s been a fundamental problem. you mentioned the defense part of the cuts, the deal was everyone s going to hate it because half the cuts come out of nondiscretionary, half comes out of nondefense nondiscretionary, half come out of defense. okay, that hasn t proven to be the case. i mean, are you surprised by how little leverage the defense cuts have seemed to give democrats to get out of the sequester? chris, i think the clock is continued to tick on this issue. it was never going to be the case the day after the sequester took effect, the sky was going to fall. you re going to have this grinding effect. so, for example, we re hearing right now that mechanics that work on, you know, our combat aircraft at military bases around the country may be furloughed as a result of this. people are going to start hearing more and more about that. so, do i wish that people came to their senses sooner?
