Community members concerned about proposed changes to the Westside Community Center

M ore than 100 neighbors gathered May 6 in an attempt to âSave the Westside Community Center,â according to a flyer circulated prior to the event. On Aug. 3, 2020, the city of Colorado Springs announced that the current operator, Woodmen Valley Chapelâs Center for Strategic Ministry, would not be renewing its contract past 2021. Community members at the center listened to a presentation from Richard Mee, who is concerned that a new operator might not maintain the buildings as a community center, or that the existing buildings could be demolished and a new development put in their place. He also claims the process to select a new operator lacks transparency.

Fine Arts Center takes arts to the streets this summer

Theâ¯Colorado Springs Fine Arts Centerâ¯at Colorado College will bring theater, dance, music and art classes to outdoor locations across Colorado Springs this summer through a new program called City as a Venue. âMaking the arts accessible to everyone is an important part of our mission,â FAC Director Idris Goodwin said. âAs health guidelines and restrictions are updated and more of our community gets vaccinated, we are optimistic about the prospect of gathering once again to enjoy the arts.â City as a Venue programming will begin in June and run through early October, presenting a robust and diverse calendar of outdoor and socially distanced arts experiences for the community.
