new rapid response system in case there is another oil spill down in the gulf like the bp well blowout. so far the price tag for all of that is $1 billion. i spoke with the head of shell oil about that last hour. we showed you part of that interview here earlier on american morning. but i also asked marvin odum about the white house six-month ban on deepwater drilling, what it means for the folks along the gulf coast, his bottom line and folks across the country as well. if it stays in place for six months there is no question in my mind we will start to lose equipment out of the gulf of mexico which means we ll loss jobs, we ll loss rigs. that well already has had a significant impact, frankly, and will continue to have a significant impact. part of the problem here, john, is that you may say if the moratorium ends in sib months what s the impact. the bigger question is do we have any certainty around when it will end. because a rig company may keep its equipment sitting there fo
after scheduling a special election the senator plans to be in that election. he is currently holding a press conference confirming his campaign for that seat, of course, the seat formally belonged to the late senator robert byrd and the conservative democrat was the longest serving senator in history holding that seat for more than 50 years. all right, oil is seeping into the gulf of mexico from that new cap. government scientists insist it s not insignificant and the lid should stay closed. but engineers are afraid stopping the leak, like putting a cork in a hose, could eventually cause more leaks. also, the judge who overturned the ban on deepwater drilling is refusing to take himself off the case. environmental groups have asked u.s. district judge martin feldman to step down because he has investments in oil and gas companies. check out the highlighted part of this picture, a blogger,
a spanish oil company could soon set up an oil rig just off the coast of florida and there s nothing the u.s. can do to stop it. cnn reports from havana. it s part of a bold new plan to search for oil in cuban waters. reporter: welcome to oil drilling cuban-style. this is what many of cuba s oil wells look like. they re onshore, land-based rigs and they are hauling up the black stuff for this country s energy depleted and cash-strapped economy. but the u.s. geological survey says there s much more out there, which has caught the attention of spanish oil giant repsol. the company is part of a consortium exploring oil drilling in cuban waters. but their plans have caused quite a stir among florida politicians wary of bp s deepwater disaster. florida prohibits most deepwater drilling off its coasts but a 1977 treaty between the united states and cuba divides the water between the two countries right down the middle. but that would allow oil companies to drill as close as 45 miles from t
deepwater drilling. in all of these statements and the to-ing and fro-ing, you forget the victims. a lot of the families of the victims saying that is galling to them, and it opens their wounds all over again about the lockerbie investigation. the only man who was in prison was greeted somewhat as a hero when he arrived back in libya and will get to live out his days, however many days he has left, in libya. that is what is difficult for these victims families to accept. momentarily we ll talk to one of the mothers of one of those victims here. in the meantime, has there been any reaction in libya? it s interesting you say this. we are going to speak to the libyan oil minister momentarily, most likely within the next hour. if we get anything from the president, we will le you know.
