For the Gazette
Growing up in the 50s, there were always a lot of ways for a kid to make money. Seasonal gigs like snow shoveling, mowing lawns, gardening, window washing and even thimbleberry picking provided more than just pocket change. My early clients included, Mrs. Frimodig, Ms. Irene Prisk, Mr. Carlos Haug and Ms. Linda Nikula.
My other occasional jobs included delivering the “Grit” newspaper, for which E.B Pancratz had the franchise, and also delivering catalogs for the Fuller Brush Company’s Mr. Moll.
I would later graduate to my regular paperboy routes for the Daily Mining Gazette and the Sunday Milwaukee Journal. I also did window washing for several downtown stores, which helped me grow a sizeable savings account at the Houghton National Bank- with the guidance of friendly banker, Dick Rowe, to keep myself equipped with the latest sports gear and other popular goodies.

The four members of the public will join others from the City Council, Planning Commission and city administration in the two-day event, which will be held June 29-30 at the Dee Stadium ballroom.
The workshop will be facilitated by the National Charrette Institute and Michigan State University Extension. The workshop is intended to determine the goals of a future charrette or other participation process so the city can develop a request for proposals. The city is seeking the best way to involve the public in the revision of the city’s downtown plan.

HOUGHTON The Houghton Planning Commission agreed to what parts of the city’s master plan it will review this year as part of a process that will also lead to recommendations on development in the city’s downtown.
The Planning Commission decided Tuesday it would tackle two chapters in the city’s master plan this year: 10, which covers the downtown, and 13, which discusses zoning ordinances.
