MADRID: Ibiza, the Spanish third division side from the island which attracts revellers from the around the world, staged a party of their own on Tuesday as they routed La Liga side Celta Vigo 5-2 in a Copa del Rey second round tie.
Ibiza were only formed in 2015 and lost 2-1 in the third round of Spain’s domestic Cup competition last season to Barcelona, having led with less than 20 minutes to play.
They made no mistake in dumping out top-flight opposition this time around, racing into a 3-0 inside the opening half an hour in a match played on artificial turf on the Balearic Island, helped by two goals from Sergio Castel and a Javi Perez strike.
“We played a complete match from start to finish,” Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane said. “We controlled the game, were balanced in our transitions between attack and defense, and recovered the ball with our pressure.
“We are feeling good. But there is still a long way to go in this league,” Zidane said about the title race as the league approaches its midway point.
