Following almost two weeks of angry outcries from New Jersey parents and law enforcement, Democrats who control the Legislature are backpedaling on a provision in new marijuana laws that prohibit police from notifying parents if they catch underage kids smoking weed or drinking alcohol.
Democratic leaders have largely been silent though the controversy. Members of the Legislative Black Caucus and Legislative Latino Caucus insisted on a wide ranging decriminalization bill or they would have pulled their support from legislation setting up New Jersey s legal marijuana marketplace. The chairmen of both caucus groups now signal they will support parental notification.
The decriminalization bill was a messy compromise that had the backing of the Black Legislative Caucus. Members successfully killed any attempt to impose fines or penalties for underage use. They claimed police would use those provisions to unfairly stop and fine minority youth more often than whites under the age of 21.

joe biden unveiling a detailed criminal justice plan today, hoping a new approach helps him deflect sharp criticism of his past. that s not likely, with debates looming next week. biden s new plan walks away from many of the approaches he championed a generation ago in helping to pass the 1994 crime bill. the mandatory minimum sentences in that package are now blamed for mass incarceration. biden s hope, when rivals criticize his past, he can steer the conversation to the future. no mandatory minimums, the end of private prison, additional funding for drug courts, bail reform, mandatory treatment, not jail for those with drug addiction. decriminalizing marijuana, expunging records for marijuana conviction. job training, education while you re in prison.
introduce kamala harris doing so with jerry nadler, the chairman of the house judiciary committee, decriminalizing marijuana. harris wants to legalize marijuana as a goal. something joe biden does not want. this effort that she s introducing today is about dekrimennalizing, and elizabeth warren is putting out a plan dealing with the student debt proposal about eliminating and eradicating student debt for millions of americans. which is interesting to see where those go. probably not to the president s desk for signature. i think that s a good chance whether the budget deal will go to his desk you look at this, though, i feel like all of this is getting loss in the sauce here. is this just me or is this not a budget deal. this is a massive debt deal. let s dig a deeper hole, and everyone seems to be okay with it. there s no doubt that s what s going to happen.
