welcome back to new day. let s start off now with our political gut check. bill clinton is talking about. let s talk about a little more than a week from now until congress leaves for holiday recess, marking a crucial deadline in budget negotiations. will congress bargain on a deal by then? do you have the holiday spirit? here with us for details is john avlon, cnn political analyst and the executive editor of the daily beast, as we like to call the greninch who stole politics i love it. let s talk about clinton in one second. i want to talk about the december 13th deadline, the budget negotiators are supposed to come together and reach a budget deal. no word on any deal yet. our capitol hill unit has some reporting they re to a point where they re talking about outlining the end game.
built into it. none of that is fixable. but you understand that is what congress voted for, that is what the supreme court affirmed. sure. and so onward? well, until we can change this. but there s nothing about a given piece of law that binds future congresses. i think it was badly flawed. when they jammed it through without a single republican vote, they got their way, but i think the american people are increasingly seeing just how unworkable this is. and so i certainly look forward to the day that we can repeal this and move in a different direction on health care. let s talk about the budget, if we can. december 13th deadline. you know that paul ryan and patty murray have been working on a framework. they re talking about something like a trillion dollars, which is more than paul ryan wanted, less than patty murray wanted, but also talking about new fees to raise revenue instead of tax hikes. from what you re hearing this general framework, could you support it? well,
now. don t call it a comeback. house of representatives back in washington this week presumably to resolve pressing legislative issues but more likely to waste taxpayer dollars fighting over the same old stuff they have been fighting about all along. as typical congress has given itself very little time to get anything done. the two chambers are in session together for just four more days this year. that is 96 hours to broker a budget deal before the december 13th deadline, not to mention the dozens of other bills that the republican-led house either ignored or rejected including but not limited to comprehensive immigration reform which passed the senate over five months ago ending employment discrimination, which more than two-thirds of the country supports and a farm bill which the house gop used to slash food assistance by $40 billion and
about this each party recognizes the problem. each party wants to do something about it. they don t like the cuts to nih, they don t like cuts to research or head start. how do you pay for it? how do you get money to do sequestration relief. that s where the two parties are at odds. i found some occasion they found an agreement but the devil is in the details. can they get to an agreement or kick the can down the road? what do you think happens in the republican party given their traditional reliance on terms of defense strength, what happens if there are further cuts by sequestration into the defense budget at the same time that most political people in washington, a lot of people around the country are talk about the iranian right. what happens? good point. the republicans hate sequestration right now as the democrats do. we got this december 13th deadline coming up, mike, and i just wonder, i find it hard to
