Local Organizations Team Up on Workshop for Summer Training Opportunities

The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES), Decatur Illinois workNet Center, Richland Community College, United Way of Decatur & Mid-Illinois, and Economic Development Corporation of Decatur-Macon County will sponsor an informational workshop on Thursday, May 6, 2021 from 9:30 to 10:30 AM CST via Zoom. The free online workshop will provide guidance and direction on how to continue receiving current unemployment benefits while enrolling in local training programs or going back to school to learn a new trade or career. Other topics discussed will include items like how to find good-paying, local jobs, how to transfer existing skills to other jobs and careers and how to locate community assistance during difficult times.

Which kind of explains how Kevin Miller and his 14-year-old daughter Audrey found themselves gingerly trying out cross-country skiing for the first time at Decatur’s Rock Springs Nature Center Sunday afternoon. “When we got Chinese food last night there was a fortune cookie that said ‘Tomorrow you will try something new,’” explained Audrey’s 50-year-old dad. “We were like, ‘Well, what can we try new in Decatur we’ve never done before?’ And then we thought of cross-country skiing because we knew they did it out here.” Side by side, Kevin and Audrey Miller take their first ski steps on a cross-country adventure.

Longtime Danville city councilman, broadcaster retires at age 79

DANVILLE, Va. — The International Broadcasters Idea Bank recently honored Danville native T. David Luther. Luther has led the IBIB as the Executive Director since 1998 when he succeeded Oklahoma Hall of Fame broadcaster Bill Payne as the organizations third Executive Director since It’s founding in 1961. He will begin an emeritus role following his retirement as the Executive Director of the organization at years end. The IBIB was founded by Virginia broadcaster Dave Lyman. This organization has grown to include Canadian, American, Australian and New Zealand broadcasters among its current membership.  Luther began his sixty plus year radio career at the age of 13 in Danville. He worked as an announcer, advertising sales representative, manager, and CEO.
