Hi peter, good to be with you. Love cspan. Thanks for having. The book really through the whole history from the of our country and theres a lot graphs and charts in this that show we have had kind of a relentless growth of government but there have been periods. Its a good question, actually. Have there been periods government has retrenched . And the answer is. Yes. So, for example for the first 50 to 100 years of our country, there really wasnt much growth of government. If government, you know, the federal government basically provided the postal service, built the roads, it provided the national and had a court system. To 100 years of our country, there really wasnt much growth of government. If government, you know, the federal government basically provided the postal service, built the roads, it provided the national and had a court system. But we didnt have all the, you know, social programs. And there was no Education Department or Energy Department back then. And and then, of course, the big. I think there were two or three things that happened in the United States that the big increase in government one was the adoption, the income tax. Because remember, for the first hundred years of this country, the the constitution actually prohibited an income tax. And then we passed a believe it was the 16th amendment. But dont quote me on that i think was the 16th amendment back in around 1913 that enabled an income tax. Well that provided this new revenue for the government. They made the announcement at the annual meeting of the legislature in beijing today. Stephen engle was there. Lets go to him now. Give us the headline. Good morning. I want to set the stage. This is a very rare occurrence where we can broadcast live from the heart of the chinese capital. This is the forbidden city and to my left is the square. Here is the great hall of the people. We have turned the camera around a little bit because of the sunlight. This is the halls of power and where the premier just spoke and morning a few hours ago gave you those headlines, keeping the target for the full at 7. 5 . Th rate does this matter .
