melanie, are republicans, based on what you re seeing and hearing, any closer to a deal on the debt? reporter: wolf, they are certainly closer. as you know in these high stakes negotiations, sometimes that last mile can be the hardest. they still have not reached a final agreement on a number of items, including spending levels, how long the debt hike is going to last, reform. but the biggest sticking point has been and continues to be tougher work requirements for social safety net programs. that is something that republicans have been really pushing for. it is a chief demand. congressman garrick gray said hell no, they are not going to drop this in their negotiations. democrats are pushing back. they are concerned about the impact on poor individuals and families. there are no more meetings scheduled today as of right now between the speaker s office and the white house. but negotiators have been working around the clock to get this done. and later tonight, my colleague
