and deficit, all the things they have been talking about for awhile. and lastly, a promise to appoint budget conferees, meaning negotiators to come together to deal with the budget which i don t think will be a tough sell since democrats have been demanding that for some time. those are the goals. whether or not obama care will be in there, that is a big open question. there is certainly a lot of pressure from ted cruz still not to give up on that. they say they might just try just to say that they tried, but privately republicans say that they just simply they know that s a nonstarter for the white house. we know democrats aren t thrilled that this republican plan doesn t include reopening the government but you are hearing now some republicans are unhappy about that, too. reporter: fascinating. our congressional producer has been combing the hallways as he usually does. he talked to so many senate republicans, really that run the gamut in the republican party from john mccain t
support a clean cr when you don t support this. but going back to luke s reporting there, i can see how we could get to a debt ceiling extension. let s take a listen to what jay carney had to say about this. i think the president said the other day that if they were to send them a clean debt ceiling extension, no partisan strings attached, he would sign it. we don t know that s what we re going to get here. ted cruz has also said he s open to short-term debt ceiling extensions. so the white house obviously there leaving some room where they could support a short-term extension. i can see how that could be resolved, at least for now. is there anything that is going to bring the government shutdown piece of this to an end, or is this going to become sort of the new normal in the way the sequester has? i think it s not clear. it can t become the new normal in the way the sequester has because the government still works under sequestration. you ve had spending cuts that might be unwi
next week they will have to come around to a short-term debt limit extension. that is what they will try to do as a first move before they move on the broader fiscal talks. so debt ceiling extension, but keep the government shut down. well, speaker john boehner knows he would like to have the republicans just pass a cleaner extension on the debt limit. he may have to go to leader nancy pelosi and get democrats. one thing that democrats are pushing for behind scenes and leader nancy pelosi met with okay, this is key, i want people to understand the math here. he can afford to lose about what? 18 votes, am i right? on anything he brings to the floor, right? that is exactly right. he starts off with 233, but really he is dealing to 150 or 90 loyalists who are probably going to be with him on any deal. so if he loses 70 on a clean
