cnn/orc, its most recent poll it shows republicans taking most of the blame for this shutdown. actually, that is wrong. democrats, 57% of americans say democrats are to blame for shutdown. but a whopping 63% believe republicans are to blame. are they? well, you know what? at the end of the day, everybody is to blame. and the big difference, aside from ideology this time, if you go back to these debt ceiling discussions, since dwight eisenhower was the president 60 years ago, we ve always been able to work it out. now, clearly, some republicans are on this kamikaze mission. but when you have the president saying he s not going to negotiate and harry reid having the fight he always wanted, it really is tough to figure out how we re going to get out of this mess. a lot of people are wondering where is joe biden when we need him. that s right. he is supposed to be good at talking to members of congress. he was in congress forever, right? yes. let s talk about house
as we told you, the market is opened just a few minutes ago. at last check, the dow was done about 140 points. reporter: it s looking a little better. you re sighing stocks bounce off their lows. this is wall street giving washington a little bit of a nudge, saying listen up. this is just a taste of what can happen if you don t get your act together. what wall street is really focusing on is the debt ceiling issue. it s a bigger deal. and that s coming in about a week and a half. what s worrying investors at this point is that the weekend came and went, no teal happened in congress. and what s even worse as far as investigators see it is boehner floating this idea to tie the shutdown discussions to the debt ceiling discussions. since there s little movement on the shutdown, that is worrying the investors. alison kosik reporting live from new york for us this
attached, short-term and force a negotiation on a larger, bigger deal. where are you on something like this? i think we are all wanting to keep a resolution to the long-term fiscal spending issues. this is something that we are better served, some of us have been trying to do this for years as you well know. we have been frustrated that the senate wouldn t do a budget now. they did a budget and didn t want to go to conference and as we look at the debt ceiling, we have to look at tax reform and entitlements. we need to roll the cr and the debt ceiling discussions together and say let s look at this long-term. can you talk about spending and priorities for congress to do the appropriate amount of oversight on that discretionary portion of money. certainly over the past couple of years, we picked that up. i think putting that attention
