in driftwood, texas following this for us. it has been a battle between a couple of texas heavyweights. update us on what s going on. reporter: the first thing you have to remember is when you have two powerful influential politicians going up against one another. one of them will lose. today rick perry the longest serving governor in texas is heading around the state, particularly dallas looking for votes and acting as governor and candidate with a comfortable lead in the polls. double digits leading into election day. mr. perry has his critics who think he has been too entrenched and he made some mistakes. the senior senator from texas has been in washington for 16 years. she still has two years left in the senate, but she is running for governor now. the problem for her has been she has been in washington for the
per y so far senator hutchison has struggled to turn her popularity into congress to a candidate. perry is gaining traction and painting hutchison as a d.c. insider. carl cameron is live in driftwood, texas. what are perry s chances? they re strong. the polls suggest the runup you had a strong lead and hovering in the mid 40s. it is likely he will be the big vote getter on the republican side. hutchison is at least 15 points behind. the question is whether or not perry can meet the 50% threshold to avoid a runoff. a third candidate, debra medina. if he falls short of 50%, and there s a possibility of that, then it would go to runoff with
constitutional type challenging to washington here. well, you know, to wayne s point, chris, you wouldn t think that the tenth amendment state s rights in secession would be the basis of a great formula for a campaign. but that s what rick perry has done. i think to wayne s point, perry was very, very smart. he saw the energy in the tea party movement and he was among the first elected officials anywhere in the country to put his name to it, appearing at rallies and that sort of thing. in doing it, he co-operated a lot of anger on the far right. i think we would be talking more about debra medina if her ri hadn t done that. it shows you how many people are in the group on the right that perry is leading. debra medina could wind up finishing second. it s a big group of people in texas of the we don t want to necessarily extrapolate it to the entire united states. dismissing the anger on the right, maybe the anger generally, as just a fringe, it s clearly not just a fringe.
