“It was, to say the least, heartbreaking,” said Deborah Woolard of Block Love CLT.
She was one of many people outraged when they first saw posts believed to be from a Charlotte area apartment complex.
“It was just insensitive. It blew my mind,” said Woolard.
The now deleted comment on a Charlotte skyline photo was from the instagram username “MAA Southline.” The user first mentioned specifics about the complex saying check out their “dirt cheap apartments”
Another poster commented on the MAA Southline apartment prices, which elicited this response.
“If you’re looking for more of a budget friendly living situation, may we suggest the tent city on North Tryon?”
They know they can get up in the morning and just walk to resources,” Woolard said.
Randall Hitt with the organization Roof Above said they do have 19 shelter openings, but find some don’t use them. We find varying reasons why people may not choose to access shelter, Hitt said. To name a few of the most prevalent: struggles with mental health challenges might make it more difficult to sleep near others in a shelter environment; concerns about COVID-19 virus might make an outdoor environment more appealing; the structure of a shelter setting might be difficult when someone is in the cycle of substance use.
