The flagship BBC2 current affairs programme - which launched in January 1980 - will also drop its team of dedicated reporters and stop doing its own investigative films.
The BBC’s chief executive has pointed out that a Newsnight exclusive wasn’t featured on the Today programme during a grilling from Amol Rajan over new cost-cutting measures.
BBC News has announced a restructure to include £500m of cuts, which will see Newsnight reformatted. There will also be nine fewer hours of single documentaries commissioned for BBC Two.
