Maria Aberg was having one of the busiest times of her 20-year theatre career when the pandemic hit. But a month after theatres closed last spring, she was almost ready to give up on being a director despite a sparkling track record. Much of it was down to the disappointment of an aborted season of European theatre she had conceived for the Royal Shakespeare Company, which meant years of work down the pan. “It was completely devastating,” she says.
Aberg had begun preparing the RSC season, Projekt Europa, just after the EU referendum in 2016, and its focus on European theatre felt profoundly personal. “I’m a Swede who has lived in Italy, Berlin, Ireland and then in the UK for 20 years [she moved to London to study drama at Mountview]. I consider myself totally European. It was the culmination of years of interest and curiosity about European theatre-makers.”

Kent s biggest theatre will stream its pantomime online for free - after being forced to scrap the festive show at the venue by coronavirus restrictions.
The Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury had been due to host a run of Nurse Nellie Saves Panto, starting on December 11, after the venue shelved its full production of Jack and the Beanstalk earlier in the year.

But when the county was plunged into Tier 3 after the second national lockdown - forcing theatres to stay shut - the launch date was pushed back to December 19.

The Marlowe in Canterbury has sold more than 14,000 tickets for Nurse Nellie Saves Panto - a âfun sizeâ festive show that was originally set to run between December 11 and January 3, for socially-distanced audiences.

And today, following confirmation the county will be remaining in this highest tier, the theatre has now postponed its pantomime until January 2.
It is now pinning its hopes on Kent being placed in a lower tier, when regional restrictions are reviewed after Christmas.
The Marlowe s chief executive, Deborah Shaw, said: Itâs such a shame that theatres have to remain closed in Tier 3, as the industry has been working incredibly hard over the past few months to make our spaces Covid- secure in accordance with strict government guidelines.
