For Christina Lasher, it’s a case of creating art from the heart.
The Belleville resident is a full-time registered practical nurse at Hastings Manor, the Hastings County-owned long-term care home on Dundas Street West. She’s also a painter, a hobby she began while on sick leave from 2017 to 2019.

And she’s seen the effects of the pandemic on its residents and coworkers. She said she doesn’t normally draw inspiration from her day job, it did lead to her latest painting.

An attempt to increase visiting options for residents of Hastings County’s two long-term care homes is underway.
Both Hastings Manor in Belleville and Hastings Centennial Manor in Bancroft have more than 200 residents.

Long-term care director Debbie Rollins said current provincial pandemic restrictions limit visits to one essential caregiver at a time and only in residents’ own rooms. The administration is now trying to find a way to allow outdoor visits while complying with restrictions, she said.

Many long-term care workers employed by Hastings County remain unvaccinated for COVID-19, with booking problems and vaccine hesitancy cited as the main obstacles.
Hastings County long-term care director Debbie Rollins broke the news Wednesday morning to members of the county’s joint long-term care committee. The county operates Hastings Manor in Belleville and Hastings Centennial Manor in Bancroft.

“All of the residents who have chosen to receive the vaccine have received both (doses),” she said.
