Sleepy Eye high school trap shooting team

The Sleepy Eye Herald Dispatch Last spring, Sleepy Eye’s newly created high school trap shooting team was able to compete in a shortened season. This spring the athletes have had a regular season, with a state tournament to follow next month. Officially called the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League, trap shooting is categorized as an “activity” by the Minnesota State High School League. Teams have local sponsors the Sleepy Eye Sportsmen’s Club for the local team which is also under the guidance of Sleepy Eye High School. The Sleepy Eye team had 38 students participate this season 12 girls and 26 boys. Team members are students from  both Sleepy Eye Public and St. Mary’s High Schools.

Seifert quads 71st birthday

The Sleepy Eye Herald Dispatch The Seifert quads put Sleepy Eye on the map when they were born to Art and Dolores Seifert at the Sleepy Eye Hospital 71 years ago. Through the years their birthday celebrations have been regularly noted in the Herald-Dispatch. Last year, the quads’ big 70th birthday party was canceled due to the pandemic. Maddie Mathiowetz chooses South Dakota State University

The Sleepy Eye Herald Dispatch St. Mary s junior Madison Mathiowetz announced her commitment to continue her education and basketball career at South Dakota State University in Brookings. She’ll join the Jackrabbits after graduation a year from now. Maddie said she’s been recruited by colleges for a couple years and recently decided she’d found the right fit with SDSU: “They have a super successful women’s basketball program and recruit good kids,” she said. Maddie is looking forward to playing with the Knights her senior year which she expects will be another successful one for her and her teammates.

Depot Museum opens 2021 Ornament available

The Sleepy Eye Herald Dispatch The Depot Museum opens for the season on Saturday, May 1, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Opening day will also be the first day the 2021 Sleepy Eye Christmas Ornament is available for purchase. To celebrate the May Day opening and ornament introduction, refreshments  will be available. Several years ago the Sleepy Eye Area Historical Society became the organization to produce the annual collectible ornament. Each year, SEAHS chooses a historical photo from the museum’s collection to feature on the ornament. For 2021 the Sleepy Eye Ornament features a 1921 photo of the Opera House, an establishment for theater and musical entertainment which occupied the second floor of the building we now know as the Palace. The building, a fixture in downtown Sleepy Eye, was erected in 1895.
